About

Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (YSFRI) , Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS), located in the heart of Qingdao, is the oldest multidisciplinary research institute of marine fisheries in China, affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA). YSFRI grew out of the Central Fisheries Laboratory, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry founded in January 1947 in Shanghai (moved to Qingdao in September 1949). With an enduring dedication to the pursuit of academic excellence for nearly 78 years, YSFRI has developed 10 research divisions and 4 experimental bases, completed more than 1,300 research projects at state, province and ministry level, and won a wide selection of awards more than 300 times (46 national awards), including the National Award for Progress in Science and Technology (2 first-class awards and 5 second-class awards), the National Invention Award (3 second-class awards), and the National Natural Science Award (1 third-class award). YSFRI owns 4 research vessels (namely “Lanhai 101”, "Beidou", “Zhongyuke 102” and “Zhongyuke 101") equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to carry out fisheries researche.

Principal Investigator

Songlin Chen, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor of Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, Director of State Key Laboratory of Mariculture Biobreeding and Sustainable Goods (BRESG), and Chief Scientist for in Biotechnology at the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences. His research has long focused extensively on fish germplasm preservation, sex control, and molecular breeding for disease resistance.

Under Prof. Chen’s leadership, his research team at YSFRI has achieved a series of significant breakthroughs in aquatic biotechnology and fish genetic breeding over the past decades. The team established a comprehensive system for fish germplasm cryopreservation, discovered the first female-specific molecular marker in fish worldwide, and successfully decoded the first fish genome in China. Moreover, they developed molecular-based sex control technologies and created the first disease-resistance SNP array "Fish Chip 1.0" in China. They also established genomic selection breeding systems for marine fish. In the field of genome editing, the team has overcome long-standing technical bottlenecks and successfully created a new fast-growing male tongue sole with genome editing, marking a major leap in breeding innovation. Besides, the team has cultivated 4 new farmed fish varieties. These

innovations have garnered high recognition in the aquatic breeding academic community. Prof. Chen has been included in the Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researchers List in Agriculture and Biological Sciences for 11 consecutive years, with over 350 SCI papers published, including two in Nature Genetics. This pioneering work provides vital technological support for the innovation and breeding of high-quality germplasm in China’s mariculture industry.
